Access Criteria

Study Characteristics

Objectives

To identify genes that affect the risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and to help improve understanding and treatment of this condition

Era of Service

All

Population

Inclusion criteria:

  • Combat-exposed male and female Veterans who participated in the Million Veteran Program (MVP), which includes active users of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA)
  • Cases: Veterans diagnosed with PTSD
  • Controls: Veterans with no diagnosis of PTSD

Exclusion criteria:

  • Veterans with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder

Study Design

Case-control (genomic)

Time Period

2013 - 2018

Setting

National

N

20,000 estimated participants

Response Rate

600 Veterans invited to participate in a telephone interview; response rate unconfirmed

Recruitment Method

Potential PTSD cases in the MVP database are initially identified based on self-report of a PTSD diagnosis on a previously completed questionnaire collected in MVP, or evidence of a PTSD diagnosis in the VA electronic health record; a validated algorithm narrows the pool to confirmed PTSD cases and controls.

Compensation

$50 for telephone (validation) interview

Data Collected

  • Clinical data
  • Demographics
  • Diagnosis of PTSD & depression

Data Collection Methods

  • MVP database
  • VA electronic health records
