Objective

To evaluate the frequency and nature of adverse health effects that might be related to exposure to “Agent Orange” and other military herbicides used during the Vietnam conflict.

Population

Ranch Hand personnel who had served among the C-123 crews (pilot, copilot, navigator, and one spray operator, ground support) between 1962 and 1971.  Controls served in 1962 -1971 with no herbicidal exposure.

Recruitment Method

Cohort enumeration involved the utilization of the Social Security Administration, the Internal Revenue Service, and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Location of subjects was determined using existing military records archived at the National Personnel Records Center, St. Louis, Missouri, and the U.S. Air Force Human Resources Laboratory, Brooks AFB, Texas.
